A framework for building trauma-informed, survivor-centered LLM products.

This framework was originally created for Chayn to bring together our trauma-informed design principles and help us center care, safety, and lived experience throughout the development of an AI tool.

It brings together core concepts from CHAYN’s trauma-informed design principles to guide conversations that help ensure that products are safe, user-centered, and aligned with survivor needs.

It has now been turned into this guide for organisations, companies and mission-driven groups exploring the development of their own AI for good and feminist AI. It is designed to kick-start thoughtful conversations when designing and evaluating Large Language Model (LLM) driven products.

It is intended for teams who want to embed trauma-informed principles into their AI work from the ground up, ensuring their technologies do not replicate harm but instead contribute to healing, equity, and social justice.

This framework is intended specifically to offer shared language and guiding questions to support responsible and reflective product development. Whether you're just beginning to explore the potential of AI or already working on a project, this guide offers an overview of how Chayn has worked on translating its trauma-informed design principles into practice into the development of our Survivor AI.

This framework was supported between Chayn and Living Labs with Practitioners, an international working group (a part of EAAMO Bridges) of interdisciplinary researchers who designed this framework from 2024-2025 as a collaboration project with Chayn.
